So I sent an e-mail to a friend about my lower back problems the other day, so I thought I'd reproduce it here for you guys. (it's edited for content)
So This e-mail is basically to tell you how much shit I'm going through because of some lower back pains that started about 4 weeks ago. Thought you'd might enjoy listening to how crappy I've been handled in our health system.
3 weeks ago, I was playing football and I threw out my lower back. I got off the field and got some ice and laid down for a while. I thought that it would probably go away by the next day, but it only got worse; the pain had moved to the rest of my back.
So I decide to go to my doctor and see what she thought. She examines me and tells me I have sciatica, which was not good. She said not to do anything for the next three days and if it still hurt to come back and get a referral. I did as much "nothing" as I could for the next three days, and sure enough, the pain got even worse, spreading to my legs. I go back and get a referral to an orthopedist.
When I call in, I tell them about my referral, and upon my mentioning it was for a lower back pain (even though i was now a full lower body pain) she immediately tells me that they don't see people with lower back issues. Ok, here is the first f*** up. Why the hell would you give me a referral to a place I can't go? I thought, just screw it, I'll go complain to my doctor about, which I did. It ended up getting me a referral to a sports medicine doctor (you would have thought that they would have sent me there first, seeing as it happened while playing football).
Before going, my uncle, an ER doctor, decides to have a look at me. He decides that I don't have sciatica, and it's definitely a pinched nerve. Now I had two diagnoses. Great, which do I tell my doctor, I thought. While I wait for my appointment, the pain has gotten even worse, now spreading to my upper body. So now it was an all-over pain. Upon arriving at the sports doctor, he examines me and disregards ALL OTHER PAIN and focuses only on my lower back. He decides I may have a stress fracture, and we get x-rays. Not only does a stress fracture NOT explain the pain in the other parts of my body, after the x-ray, he tells me, "It looks like you may have a stress fracture, but I can't be sure. I need you to go get a bone scan." (A bone scan is a NUCLEAR x-ray. They load you with a nuclear isotope, and it makes you glow so the x-ray can take a better picture...so I get to glow for a day...WOOHOO) Now I had 3 diagnoses. What the F***! Why doesn't one doctor
listen to the other doctors' diagnoses? Not one of the two listened to sciatica, or even tried to test to see if that was the problem! They won't give me a straight answer! PLUS the bone scan, which I was referred to two weeks ago, is this FRIDAY (the 8th!) I have had too wait 2 and a half f***ing weeks while the pain continue to get worse until I get tested to see if a stress fracture is even the correct diagnoses! WHAT THE F***! THESE DOCTOR'S SUCK ASS! GIVE ME A GOOD DIAGNOSES SO I CAN GET BETTER AND GET RID OF THIS FUCKING PAIN SO I CAN GO ON WITH MY LIFE! JESUS!
Thank you for reading this, I just needed to vent really...constant pain everywhere sucks!
